And the former home of author John Fox, Jr. is now a Virginia Historic Landmark that contains furnishings and memorabilia from the Fox family.

Wise County has been called home by many famous and intriguing people, including U-2 spy pilot Francis Gary Powers; actor George C. Scott; bluegrass legend Dr. Ralph Stanley; Grand Ole Opry stars Jim and Jesse McReynolds; former Green Bay Packer and Super Bowl Champion Carroll Dale; Glenn Roberts, originator of the basketball jumpshot; and Olympic Gold Medalist Ollan Cassell.

Big Stone Gap served as the former home and inspiration for novelists John Fox, Jr. and Adriana Trigiani.  Fox penned many famous works, including The Trail of the Lonesome Pine and The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come.  Trigiani authored the trilogy Big Stone Gap, Big Cherry Holler, and Milk Glass Moon.  

 Pound native Napoleon Hill wrote magazine profiles of such business leaders as Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford, and Thomas Edison. Hill virtually invented the gospel of personal achievement by distilling their principles of financial success into several motivational books, including the bestseller Think and Grow Rich. Napoleon Hill also lectured widely and served as an advisor to presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Wise County also plays host to many other annual events such as the Virginia-Kentucky District Fair & Horse Show and to many mountain music festivals, including The Dock Boggs Festival, Ralph Stanley Memorial Bluegrass Festival, and the Mountain People's Music Fair.

The Trail of the Lonesome Pine, Virginia's Official State Outdoor Drama, opened in 1964 and is now the longest-running outdoor drama in the State and the fifth oldest outdoor drama in the nation. The story, written by John Fox, Jr., tells of the great coal boom in Southwest Virginia and the resulting changes in the people and the region. The Trail of the Lonesome Pine is performed mid-June through late August at the June Tolliver Playhouse.

The Pro-Art Association, an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, presents musical, theatrical, and artistic programs to its members, the public, and in the schools.

The Harry W. Meador, Jr. Coal Museum in Big Stone Gap provides "a little peek into the past, a big look at our coal mining heritage." The museum is open year round except for the major holidays.  The Southwest Virginia Museum and gift shop are open to the public Tuesdays through Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Fridays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.  From Memorial Day to Labor Day, the museum is also open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  (The museum is closed during January and February for yearly maintenance.  The museum is also closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.) Museum admission rates are $3.00 for adults, $2.00 for children ages 6 to 12, and children under 6 are admitted free.  For groups of 10 or more, admission is $1.50 per person.  Annual passes are also available at a cost of $15 per family (covers up to four people living in the home), $5 per adult, and $3 per child (6 - 12).  For more information, please call 276-523-1322.  (Rev. 5/05)

The "Trail of the Lonesome Pine" Outdoor Drama, the Official State Outdoor Drama of Virginia, will be performed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, July 1 through August 28, at the June Tolliver Playhouse in Big Stone Gap. Box office opens at 7:00 p.m.  Pre-show entertainment begins at 7:30 p.m. and curtain time is 8:00 p.m.  Opening in 1964, "The Trail of the Lonesome Pine" is the longest-running outdoor drama in Virginia. Based on the best-selling novel by John Fox, Jr., the drama is interwoven with beautiful, haunting folk music, some of it original, and is performed before a magnificent 72 ft. panoramic painting of Powell Valley. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors ages 55+, and $8 for children ages 4-12. The Library Gallery in the Wise County Public Library in Wise features monthly displays by local artists and craftspeople.

Country Cabin II features local and regional musicians every Saturday night from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m.  It is located on US 23/58A, 1 1/2 miles southwest of Norton, Virginia.  The cabin offers a family-oriented program, complete with cakewalks, clogging, mountain two-step, and broom dances.  Refreshments are available.  Occasional seasonal events and special holiday programs, fundraisers, weddings, etc. are also held at Country Cabin II.  Parking and access for handicapped patrons is provided.  The Country Cabin is a non-smoking facility, and all events hosted by Appalachian Traditions are non-alcoholic.  Bus tours are welcome.  For more information, please call Bill or Nancy Jones at 276-679-2632.  (Rev. 6/04)
